Want it. Dream it. Do it. “Be IT!”
If you take a look at the list provided in my first article about Artist Development, you will see the above phrase at the top of the list. Although I did not put the rest of the list in any particular order, I did put this one at the top, because I believe it is essential to being successful at anything, especially when considering becoming a popular musical artist.
The Power of your thoughts will BLOW your mind.
You have to know what you want before your direction makes any difference. Like the Cheshire cat says in Alice in Wonderland, “If you don’t know where you want to go, then it doesn’t really matter what road you take!”
Your mind plays a major role in achieving every kind of success and goal, minor, everyday goals or big goals. When it comes to minor or day-to-day goals, one usually knows what he or she wants to do, but when it comes to major goals like becoming a popular singer, most people aren’t quite able to put their finger on the goal button. They want to do something big, but they don’t know exactly what it is or how to start. Artists in this place tend to get stuck in the “dream” and the result is frustration and eventual dismissal of the “dream.”
Many of the aspiring musical artists I interview as part of their auditions tell me that they have wanted to become a singer for many years. On average it is 6-8 years of wanting to become a singer. Problem as I see it is that they don’t really know what they want. They say they want to become a singer, but what does that really mean? To do anything you must know exactly what it is you want to do. To focus your will power on a goal, you need to have a concise and clearly defined goal. How do you go about that?
Start by thinking or meditating, to find out what is it that you want to do or gain. For some, this might not be a simple step, as it requires deep thinking, investigation and the ever-elusive time factor. After visualizing what you really want to accomplish, you need to come up with a plan of action. The most important and most difficult part of the action plan is Step ONE followed by how to proceed. All of this requires organization, which means using the power of the mind.
After establishing a plan for your goal, you need to hold in your mind a clear mental image of your goal. Imagine your goal completed. How do you feel? What is different in your life and in the lives of those around you? This step requires a vivid imagination, which is not something everyone has. Regular training of the imagination can do wonders. You can train yourself how to imagine by looking at photos of what you want to achieve. Close your eyes, and try to see it in your imagination. This will improve your ability to visualize.
After you know what you want and have visualized yourself already having achieved your goal, now it’s time to get started and to practice patience, self-discipline and the power to persist in your efforts. This requires a one-track mind. Yes, a one-track mind is a good thing when it comes to accomplishing positive goals. Be open to positive influence, but stay focused on your goal and don’t let anything sway you from your evolving vision.
One tool to assist you along the road to achieve your goals and lead to your success is the use of affirmations. Instead of walking around saying, “I wanna be…”, start saying, “I am…”. For instance, if you want to be a singer, take a stack of sticky notes and write “I am a singer!” on them and stick them on the mirror in your bathroom, in your locker at school and everywhere else you may catch a glimpse of them throughout your day. Whenever you see the notes, say the words out loud. What you affirm sinks into your subconscious mind, becomes part of your subconscious mind, and eventually becomes who you are. Positive affirmations lead to positive results.
Thought transference is another important tool you can use to achieve your goals. What the heck is thought transference? No, I’m not talking about some hokey pokey mind trick. Often as artists, you have to persuade others to invest in your plans or to help you in other ways. You can talk until you are blue in the face, but if you don’t believe what you’re saying; no one else will ever believe you. That’s what a Wanna Be is – someone who talks the talk, but doesn’t walk the walk. You need to really believe what you’re saying, and say it enthusiastically and persuasively, otherwise they won’t listen and won’t care. You need to be able to reject any doubts that may come your way either internally or externally. To be able to do this, you need body and mind awareness, preparedness and the willingness to succeed and NOT give up.
Motivation is another important success ingredient. How can you achieve anything if you are not motivated enough and properly? Surround yourself with like-minded people. Motivation can come from within by way of inspiration, but more often motivation comes from the outside. Being motivated by others is very powerful. Observe as others achieve their goals and instead of becoming jealous or envious of their successes, congratulate them and say to yourself, “If they can do it, so can I!” Imagine how you will feel and what you will gain by achieving your goal. Focus on that and not so much the obstacles in your way.
Surround yourself with people who have the knowledge and experience you need to succeed.
Your thoughts possess power. The thoughts you think most often tend to come true. If you channel your mental energy into the same thoughts day after day, they will affect your attitude, expectations, behavior and actions. Trust me when I tell you this… The thoughts and mental images you think are subconsciously perceived by other people, and subsequently increase your chances to receive help or opportunities. I don’t believe in coincidences. I believe that thoughts can create what is usually considered as coincidence. Positive thoughts attract into your life corresponding events, situations and opportunities that are in line with your dreams and aspirations.
Ok… So you know what you want and you’re willing to prepare your mind and body to become aware of things that will increase your odds of success. You’re prepared to use tools to help you. You are receiving motivation and are on the road to success. What can stop you? Really only one thing can stop you and that’s YOU. Not every thought turns into reality. Fears doubts and worries tend to destroy what you build with the power of your mind. You must clear your mind of negative thoughts and doubts. Through proper training, you can learn most of what it takes to become a success in the music business or any business venture for that matter.
As my good friend and co-founder of “Be It!”, Jim McMahan suggests, “Making it in the music business is much like the work needed to enjoy a chocolate shake. It’s all thick and just waiting for you to taste it. You poke the straw through the hole, put your lips on the straw and start working to bring the shake up to your mouth. You can’t see the straw, so you imagine the frosty treat climbing up the straw with each inward draw between you and your success. Although the cool reward gets closer and closer as you labor to bring the thick shake up the straw, you start to lose your confidence, thinking the straw is just too thin or the shake is just too thick or you just don’t have the strength to do it. You give up, only to discover that once you look at the straw you see that the shake was a mere millimeter from the top of the straw and had you only kept up your efforts for one second more you would have been rewarded with what you had been dreaming of all along.”
Bottom line is this… If you want to “Be It!”, you must NOT GIVE UP!
